Obtaining “permanent residence” or “permanent resident status” in Canada, commonly referred to as “immigrating to Canada” or becoming a “landed immigrant,” is the successful culmination of the immigration process. This process results in the issuance of an “immigrant visa” or a “confirmation of permanent residence document.” Individuals who receive this visa or document must present it to an Immigration officer at one of Canada’s official ports of entry to officially become landed immigrants.

Canadian permanent residents, also known as landed immigrants, and citizens share the same rights and privileges, such as access to free healthcare and free elementary and secondary education, with three key differences:

  1. Permanent residents are not allowed to vote.
  2. Permanent residents cannot obtain a Canadian passport.
  3. Permanent residents can be deported if convicted of certain crimes.

Within any five-year period, a permanent resident must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (two years).
  2. Be outside of Canada while accompanying a Canadian citizen who is their spouse, common-law partner, or a child accompanying a parent.
  3. Be outside of Canada while employed full-time by a Canadian business.
  4. Be an accompanying spouse, common-law partner, or child of a permanent resident who is outside Canada and employed full-time by a Canadian business.

To be eligible for immigration to Canada, individuals must meet the criteria of one of the various Canadian immigration categories:

  1. Federal Skilled Worker Class
  2. Federal Skilled Trades Class
  3. Canadian Experience Class
  4. Business Class
  5. Family Class

Applicants must then apply for Permanent Residence through a designated Case Processing Centre or Centralized Intake Office.
